Ajinomoto Scholarship Foundation Starts in April Expansion to Include Overseas Students in Japan Total \40 Million to Be Awarded in Fiscal 2005
March 2, 2005 - Tokyo - Ajinomoto Co., Inc. (Ajinomoto, President & CEO: Kunio Egashira; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan) will launch the Ajinomoto Scholarship Foundation* in April and provide strong support for its activities. The Foundation will provide scholarships to researchers who have completed a university undergraduate, graduate school or doctoral program specializing in chemistry or any of the other sciences, including overseas students in Japan from Asia and South America, where Ajinomoto conducts business. The total amount to be awarded will be \40 million in fiscal 2005 and \50 million each year thereafter.
Ajinomoto aims to contribute to the development of promising, capable personnel by making the scholarship program part of its social contribution activities.
Overview of Scholarship Program
1) Repayable Scholarships (Loans)
Recipients: Individuals in good health with a strong sense of purpose and an excellent
academic record, who are majoring in chemistry or any of the other sciences, and who are currently enrolled in a university undergraduate or graduate school science program.
Amount: Undergraduates: \30,000/month (living with parents); \35,000/month (living
separately from parents)
Graduate students: \40,000/month (living with parents); \45,000/month (living separately from parents)
Number of recipients: Approximately 40 (Third or fourth-year undergraduates and
graduate students in a masters or doctoral program only)
2) Non-repayable Scholarships (Grants)
Recipients: Individuals in good health with an excellent academic record and character,
who have completed a doctoral program in chemistry or any of the other sciences at a graduate school and are conducting academic research.
Amount: \100,000/month (\1.2 million/year)
Number of recipients: Approximately 8;
3) Scholarships for Overseas Students in Japan (from 2005)
Recipients:
1. Students with foreign citizenship, mainly from Asia and South America, who are in Japan
to study or conduct research in the field of food, nutrition and health.
2. Overseas students currently attending a Japanese university or graduate program, or
whose enrollment has been determined, who have an excellent academic record and are
physically and mentally healthy, who are in verifiable need of assistance and who can
obtain a recommendation from an advisor.
Amount: \150,000/month (for 2 years, in principle)
Number of Recipients: 10 (5 in fiscal 2005, 10 (including 5 new recipients) in fiscal 2006
and thereafter)
* The Ajinomoto Scholarship Foundation was formerly the Suzuki Scholarship Foundation. The Suzuki Scholarship Foundation was established in 1957 for the purpose of “making a contribution to the development of scientific research by providing loans to cover the academic expenses of undergraduates and graduate students specializing in chemistry or related sciences to assist them in their studies in order to nurture scientists who can contribute to the future of society.” Established with an endowment from Ajinomoto and Saburosuke Suzuki, relative of Ajinomoto’s founder and third president of the company (chairman at the time the Foundation was established), the Foundation has provided support for approximately 1,300 researchers and scientific personnel to date.
